AN OASIS IN THE DESERT

The view was so beautiful, I even got Dave up the 2nd day
to photograph the sunrise over the lake!

Every place we go tends to be our “favorite”… but Lake Powell has to rank right up there! (probably behind the Grand Canyon – hard to top that!)… It was so relaxing and beautiful!  When we got in, somehow my wonderful husband negotiated for the very best spot in the campground.  It had an amazing view of the lake and we were on the end of the loop with almost nothing between us and the water.  It was so pretty we kept all the curtains open except when absolutely necessary (and sometimes not even then! LOL).  The first night we just settled in and enjoyed the campfire and brats.
Monday, Dave had some Design Strategy work to do in the AM so I rode into Page (not much there, but I did find a Starbucks and a Safeway and the “church row”  my dad had told me about).  That afternoon I decided I needed a little more “alone” time and I knew David was a lot more interested in the Glen Canyon Dam than I was so he did the tour while I “chilled” by the lake composing Abbie’s 3rd Birthday book and going through the prose, poetry (a major rip off of Dr. Seuss!!) and pictures. Dave liked the tour and decided after hearing how Glen Canyon compared to Hoover Dam that he was like Glen Canyon:  not the tallest; not the longest; but the more "robust" (ie heavier, in the dams case, more concrete... for Dave I won't comment!! LOL)  That night as we were opening wine, a couple was setting up across from us and I went over to invite them to come and share the wine with us.  Petra and Rito Schmidt were from Switzerland and were on their honeymoon.  They were so cute… brought over their wedding pictures (which were in an amazing castle!) and maps of where they were going.  They ended up joining us for bison burgers and we talked long into the evening, sharing more pictures and tales of the American West.  One of the pictures at their wedding was of a cake shaped like an RV with a piggy bank inside for folks to contribute to this trip!!  He was an engineer so he and David bonded.. lol… and she was a pharmacy assistant.  We enjoyed their views of America and he enjoyed David’s beer!!

Tuesday was Lake Day!  We rented a 19 foot boat and explored several parts of Lake Powell.  The weather was perfect and this time we were a little more careful with sun screen (in ’96 we all got sun poisoning on the lake).  We explored some coves that took us into amazing canyons where you literally had to use the oars to push the boat off the both sides of the canyon at the same time.  The water was crystal clear and at times took on alternately a blue color from the sky or a gold hue from the canyon walls’ reflections.  At less than 70 degrees, Deb wasn’t ready to brave the water, but Dave enjoyed a dip in one of the secluded coves!
A fisherman told us the water was over 80 feet deep here!

  1. Hello Deb and Dave,
we already returned one week ago to Switzerland. We had some more nice weeks in the US, and still remember the evening we spent with you at Wahweap CG. Hope you have a good time and we wish you the best!
